Altered Reality 2

To most sentient beings, the concept of “reality” is widely believed to be a constant, unchanging force, defining the very rules and laws the universe must abide by. Up is up, blue is blue, water is wet, and so on. This belief is what provides most people with a sort of unspoken foundation for how the world worked, offering a comforting notion that these same rules could never be altered, changed, or rewritten.

However, those same people would be horrified to learn then that the fabric of reality is not so set in stone as they were first lead to believe, but a constant rippling force that could change at a moment’s whim, radically altering the way these rules became enforced. Though the vast majority would never know who or what had altered these rules, this same people would neither care not notice a change in their reality, going about their day with the same assurance that things were how they were supposed to be and had always been. In rare cases, individuals might experience a nagging feeling that something was amiss. Usually such changes are relatively minor anyway and go without being noticed even by those aware something has changed, but other times the effects of these “Ripples” can be far more pronounced.

On this day, one such Ripple passed over the planet Earth, though the effects of this ripple were only felt by a small group of people across the globe, most of which were barely aware that their very concept of reality had changed at all.

Take one Darcie Griffith, for instance. On this particular day, this smart woman was busy studying to pass the bar exam that would finally allow her to start practicing law. Darcie had spent years working her way through law school, with dreams of becoming an appointed judge one day.

As she scanned through her law textbook, she was unaware as a Ripple passed over her. It only lasted a fraction of a second, but by the time it was over Darcie and everything in her apartment had been changed. Not that Darcie was aware of any changes having taken place.

Now, the once aspiring lawyer giggled to herself as she sat on a playmat on the floor, doodling silly drawings with coloured markers onto pieces of paper on the floor. The v-neck sweater she had been wearing before had changed a plaid t-shirt, one that did nothing to hide the thick diaper that had replaced her panties and jeans.

Sitting up, Darcie glanced down at her diaper, seemingly deep in through for a moment before she picked up one of the markers and drew a line across her diaper with it. She giggled as she grabbed more of her markers and drew more coloured lines across her diaper. Now her plain old white diaper looked far more colourful, and not the slight shade of yellow on the front that gave away her little accident earlier.

Not that Darcie cared about things like that anymore, sticking one of the markers up her nose as she continued to doodle and draw. She was an artist afterall, and she wanted make sure she had plenty of pretty drawings to show her boyfriend when he came over later. He’d be so proud of her! Maybe he’d even bounce her up and down on his knee like he knew she liked!

And thus, another life had been altered by this Ripple as it continued to pass through the delicate fabric of reality, making even more changes in its wake.

The Wishing Box

Life sucked.

That was all Nicole could think about as she stood behind the counter at her crappy paying job that just barely paid enough to keep her from going hungry. Between her student debt and rising inflation, Nicole was firmly stuck in a hole that was only getting deeper and deeper by the day.

Still, she smiled a little as an old lady stepped up to the counter, a regular of the store named Claudia who always made Nicole feel a little better, even on her worst days. However, that happiness was shortlived as Nicole remembered that Claudia was moving today, and this would likely be the last time she ever saw her.

“What’s wrong, sweetie?” Claudia asked as Nicole rung up her items, noticing the sad look in the girl’s eyes.

“I… I’m going to miss you,” Nicole replied, just barely keeping from bursting into tears.

“Me too…” Claudia replied, reaching up and gently clasping Nicole’s hand. “You’ve been such an angel to me all these years that I wanted to give you a little present, something to remember me by.” Reaching into her purse, Claudia pulled out something and handed it to Nicole.

Nicole’s eyes widened at the tiny box nestled in her hand, beautifully decorated with care. “It’s lovely.”

“It’s called a Wishing Box, an old tradition from my mother’s time. She would tell me stories that if you put a piece of paper with a wish inside and placed it under your pillow, your wish would come true the next day. I thought that someone as sweet as you could use a little magic in her life.”

Nicole thanked Claudia, even hugging her one last time before the old woman gathered up her purcases and exited the store one last time. All through the rest of her shift, Nicole couldn’t stop thinking about the Wishing Box she’d been given…

Later that night, Nicole stared at the Wishing Box now sitting on her desk. She was far too old to believe in something as silly as magic, but the way Claudia had talked about had sparked a hint of curiosity in her, enough to actually give the box a try.

Her first thought was to wish for money, so much money that she would never need to work a day in her life, but that seemed like such a selfish wish for something that Claudia had so lovingly handmade for her. After much thought, she fianlly decided on what she would wish for.

I wish for a better, happier life,” she wrote on a small slip of paper before placing it into the Wishing Box. Cradling the box in her hands, she slipped it under her pillow before laying her head down and drifiting off to sleep, dreams of a better life drifting through her head.

When morning finally came, Nicole was awoken not by the loud blaring of her alarm clock, but by a stray beam of sunlight streaming through her window. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, Nicole groggily sat up, her still half asleep mind wondering if her wish ahd come true.

However, everything was exactly how she remembered it. The walls of her room were still decorated with adorable prints of rainbows and colourful animals, her toy chest was still in the corner, and her changing table was still were it was supposed to be. Standing up on shaky legs in her crib, Nicole looked herself over and was disappointed to find that she was still wearing the same pink nightie she had worn to bed the night before, and a quick squeeze of her nighttime diaper showed that she had wet herself, just as she did every night.

And yet, Nicole inexplicably felt happier than when she had gone to sleep and she couldn’t put her finger on why. Maybe the Wishing Box had worked afterall?

She was interrupted by the sound of the door to her nursery opening as Mommy poked her head inside the room, smiling at the sight of Nicole standing up in her crib. “My my, someone’s excited for today, huh?”

“Mommy!” Nicole happily cooed as she was gently picked up and carried over to the changing table and placed down onto its padded surface. As Mommy carefully undid the tapes to her soaked nighttime diaper, Nicole’s mind swam with excitement at all the fun things Mommy and her were going to do today.

Once she was changed into her much cuter daytime diaper, she would be carried down to the kitchen for a filling breakfast topped off with her morning bottle, fed to her by Mommy in her rocking chair just as she liked. After her belly was full of warm milk, the pair would then spend sometime giggling at cartoons on tv. Nicole would likely need another diaper change before lunch, but that just meant that afterwards Mommy was going to take her to the park, just like she’d promised!

Nicole giggled and cooed as Mommy tickled her exposed belly, her previous thoughts of the Wishing Box trickling to the back of her mind. Unbeknowst to Nicole, the Wishing Box had granted her wish, transporting her to a world where she was little more than a big baby to be cared for by her Mommy. No longer would she have to worry about things like working a dead end job or wondering if she would be able to make ends meat that month. No, the worst thing Nicole had to worry about now was needing her diaper changed before she leaked.

One day Nicole might decide to “grow up” again, but until then she would have nothing less than a better, happier life, just like she had wished for.
